9/20/2006 7:14:55 PM | Field Hockey
Philadelphia – Temple scored less than six minutes into the game and staved off the Drexel attack to earn a 1-0 victory in non-conference field hockey action at Temple's Geasey Field. Junior Alli Lokey corralled a long rebound and fired a shot that was out of the reach of Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom). With the win, Temple improved to 6-3 while Drexel fell to 6-2.
Whitney Enck (Solanco, Pa./Solanco) earned her first career start in place of the injured Cassandra Prentiss (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke) at forward. Enck and the rest of the Drexel offense generated six first half shots but Temple's Erin Hanshue turned away the three that were on goal. In the second half, Drexel's best opportunity to tie the score came when Catherine Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) split two Owl defenders with a pass to Amanda Kicera (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) who was racing toward the cage. Hanshue charged out off the crease and while Kicera managed to elude her she was unable to regain control of the ball to get a shot on goal.
For the game, Temple outshot Drexel 10-9 while the Dragons held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. McAndrew made three saves in goal while Hanshue stopped four.
The Dragons open their Colonial Athletic Association season when they host No. 3 Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 24. Game time is 1 p.m.
